Ms. Allison Mendenhall, Third Grade Teacher
Ms. Mendenhall joined the JCMES team during the 2016-17 school year. She grew up in Northern Virginia where she attended Centreville High School in Fairfax County, graduating in 2012. Upon graduation, she attended Bridgewater College where she received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. During the summer of 2016 she became the director at the YMCA summer camp, a camp she had worked at the previous three summers. She says, "As much as I love my "Y" family, I am very excited to now be a member of the "Jake" family." When she is not teaching, she enjoys relaxing. She loves living in the Valley and exploring all of the hiking trails and activities that this area has to offer. She loves traveling and bringing other parts of the world back to the valley. Her plans are to teach a couple years and then return to school to get her MEd in Gifted Education.
Mrs. Candice Ray, Third Grade Teacher
Mrs. Ray began her career at JCMES in the fall of 2007 as a First Grade teacher. She did a one year stint in Kindergarten in 2012, then moved back to first grade. Since 2015 she has been with the third grade team. She is a 2001 graduate of Halifax County High School in South Boston, Virginia. Upon completion of her high school requirements she attended James Madison University where she graduated with her B. A. in English in 2004. In 2007 she completed requirements for M. A.T. in Early Childhood Education, also at JMU. Mrs. Ray's favorite quote is "Make it Work!" by Tim Gunn. She states, "This is my favorite quote because it's true for me as a teacher and for my students. No matter what hand we're dealt, we have to use what we have and make the best of it." Mrs. Ray loves living in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley with her husband, Andy and her two cats, Johnny and June."

Mr. Showalter has been a teacher at JCMES since the 2004-05 school year. He is a local graduate of Turner Ashby High School. After graduating from high school, he went to Bridgewater College where he majored in Education. Recently, he has completed his Masters in Reading Education and is currently seeking his masters in Educational Leadership through James Madison University.
His favorite quote is from Abe Lincoln, "Whatever you are, be a good one."
The reason he likes this quote is because he is a huge fan of Abe Lincoln. Plus, it is simple yet powerful. Mr. Showalter takes this to mean that whatever you choose to be in your life whether it be a teacher, lawyer, doctor, scientist, video game designer, author or anything else, give it 110% everyday. He feels that Abe is saying that he wants you to show great work ethic, but also treat people with kindness and compassion while doing so.
