Dear JCMES Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you in the building yesterday for parent-teacher conferences—thank you for taking the time to discuss your child’s progress and pick up fundraiser items! If you weren’t able to attend, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher for report cards and other important progress updates. As we celebrate Election Day today, we’re reminded of the power of community—and your continued involvement in our school makes all the difference.

Online Book eFair

John C. Myers Library is hosting a Follett online book eFair. The online book fair will run from November 3rd - 16th. All purchases can be made using this link and enter our Book eFair code: 45354. This is a great opportunity to purchase books to help benefit our school. Thank you for your support!

PTO Sign Ups

We’re so grateful for the many families who help make our school feel like a community, and we’d love to invite you to get involved in whatever way fits your schedule.  In this Google form, you can let us know if you’re interested in supporting the PTO by donating teacher snacks, greeting families at fundraiser nights, helping with events like Field Day, or assisting with the annual auction. Every helping hand—big or small—makes a meaningful difference for our students and staff!

Information for VDOE Parent Listening Sessions

On September 25, 2025, the Virginia Board of Education unanimously approved revisions to cut scores for mathematics and reading Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. Cut scores define the minimum score a student must achieve to reach a performance level on an assessment. The Virginia Department of Education is currently gathering feedback from parents on the implementation of revised cut scores.

Listening sessions provide the opportunity for parents to receive an overview of the proposed implementation models, share their feedback on the models, and identify supports and resources needed by parents to help their child meet higher expectations. You can also share your input using this feedback form. To learn more about new cut scores and upcoming stakeholder listening sessions, please visit Raising Expectations in Virginia K-12 Education.

Caught Being a Jake Program

Our school is excited to launch the “Caught Being a Jake” program for the 2025–26 school year, celebrating students who embody the JAKE Way through their Accountability, Kindness, and Ethical behavior. Each month we’re doing a little extra to highlight the character-building theme in guidance lessons with monthly themes around gratitude, goal setting, and fairness. When staff “catch” a student being a JAKE, they’ll recognize students with a smiley face sticker to proudly place on our Giant Jake wall near the cafeteria. Through morning announcements and special recognition opportunities, we’re building a culture of encouragement and celebrating the great choices our students make every day. Looking forward to seeing those stickers covering the Giant Jake!

Cafeteria Update

Mrs. Elaine, our cafeteria manager, sends out emails and letters when accounts are low, so please be on the look out for information regarding your child's account. We try and reach families before too many charges build up to keep repayment manageable. Money can be added to a student’s lunch account either here at school or online through www.myschoolbucks.com. Free and reduced-price meal applications are available for RCPS families for the 2025-2026 school year. Apply today at www.myschoolapps.com. If a paper application is needed, forms are available here at school.
